Toilet
Toilets are probably the most basic, and the most needed unit in the bathroom, but we never think about them too much. They just serve their purpose. Only when we need to buy a new toilet do we realize how many toilet styles there are to choose from.
Some types of toilets you can buy are: closed-coupled or one-piece toilets, two-piece toilets, wall-hung toilets which you can often see in shopping malls, and back-to-wall toilets which are great if you need to save space.
There are also different flushing systems: single-flush, double-flush, and no-touch flush.
If you are purchasing a toilet for your home, you’ll most probably choose a two-piece, single-flush toilet, because that’s the most common type for a household.
Again, it’s important to carefully measure how much space you have in your bathroom, and to measure the toilet you’re interested in.
Sink
Just like toilets, sinks also come in a variety of styles.
Under-mount sinks are installed underneath a countertop, and the good thing about them is that they are easy to clean. They are commonly used in households.
Drop-in sinks are less expensive, but of lower quality and more difficult to clean.
Integral sinks are sinks that form one piece with the countertop, so they are the same material as the countertop and their appearance is very sleek and stylish.
Standalone sinks resemble separate bowls, and they are more expensive.
The most common material used for sinks is the vitreous china, but if you want classier, more contemporary sink styles, you may consider stainless steel, copper or some other metal, glass, or cultured marble.
Sinks get clogged more often than other fixtures, so it’s important to clean and maintain them properly.
Faucet (Tap)
When purchasing a faucet, make sure you check what kind of sink you have – with one, two, or three holes. You’ll need to buy a matching tap for your sink.
The price range is amazing for such a relatively small bathroom fixture. The price will depend on the material and the style you choose. It can have sharp or round edges, a waterfall spout or modern sharp lines.
Brass and stainless steel are most commonly used materials for taps because they are resistant to corrosion, but there are some more economical options, like zinc alloy.
When purchasing a faucet, you need to consider its size. You don’t want the spout to be too long or too short for your sink. It should be easy to grip and turn on, especially if you have kids who will use it.
Things to Consider When Buying Fixtures: A Recap
If the variety of fixture styles seems overwhelming, make a checklist of the most important criteria for consideration:
- Fixture size (dimensions)
- Material (quality and looks)
- Ease of maintenance
- Design/style (modern, traditional, minimalistic, high-end…)
- Price
Don’t forget to match the colors of your bathroom fixtures. That doesn’t mean that everything in your bathroom should be the same color, but it won’t look good if you have a shiny white sink, and an off-white bathtub.
After you’ve made up your mind which bathroom fixtures to purchase, it’s time to call your trusted plumbing professional to set everything up.

“Would not hesitate to recommend Red Seal Plumbing. I had three separate issues that Alex fixed – where two other plumbers failed. He gave me a price up front for each issue, including the option of repairing a section for a fraction of the cost or replacing the whole line (100 year old cast iron drainpipe). Very friendly, showed me everything he did. Hopefully, my plumbing issues are over for some time. But if I ever need a plumber again, I will definitely use this company.”
